Making Sense of Suffering

... that I may know him ... the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death ...

Philippians 3:10

As we age, we see how much suffering there is. The pain can be emotional, physical, or both. At times, suffering can lead to anger toward God. Why does our loving and merciful God permit this?

God does indeed permit pain and suffering, but he never abandons his children to it. It is in suffering that God shows himself always by our side. We are not in control; he is! Martin Luther reminds us that because of Christ, suffering is both noble and holy.

From his own time on earth, Jesus knows what we are going through. His Spirit uses these times and his gifts to strengthen us. It is in our suffering that we need God the most and see him as all-loving and all-powerful. From trials come blessings!
