Boast Only in the Cross

But far be it from me to boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ ...

Galatians 6:14

For years I have struggled to become more humble. I am now proud of how humble I have become! (What foolishness!)

Isn’t it part of our sinful humanity to want to make us look good? We can fool ourselves, but not our Lord. Isaiah 64:6 reminds us that our best efforts are “polluted rags,” surely nothing to boast about.

The Gospel of the Cross on the other hand assures us that our Savior has taken our “rags” upon himself and replaced them with “robes of righteousness.” This is the only thing worth boasting about: what Christ has done, is doing, and will do in our lives.

It’s not how good or bad we are, but how perfect our Savior is. Rely on that, boast in that alone.

Paul Scheidt
Chesterfield, MO

Lord Jesus, teach me to be humble about myself, but to be proud of what you have done and are still doing for me. Amen.

Reflect: Confess your need for grace. Confess your faith in Jesus.

Read: Isaiah 64:6-9 and Philippians 3:7-11
